This 4 day lecture and hands-on laboratory course is designed to provide the novice with an introduction to the molecular biology and related laboratory procedures which are widely used in biotechnology. The participants in this workshop  will acquire skill in the use of "generic" methods, and through an understanding of such methods, improve their effectiveness as workers in a contemporary research laboratory.

Lecture Topics
Basics of mammalian & bacterial cell culture and cell maintenance. Types of cell lines, differences between cell line and primary culture; Introduction Nucleic Acids; DNA and RNA extraction and Purification. Methods to quantify and analyze DNA and RNA.  Protein Purification & Analysis; Basics of genetic engineering: Restriction Enzymes and Restriction Mapping; Other Pertinent Enzymes; Cloning end expression vectors, DNA libraries, libraries screening libraries; The Polymerase Chain Reaction Part I: Principles, Theory, Optimization; The Polymerase Chain Reaction Part II – PCR Variations: Real Time PCR, qPCR, Nested PCR

Laboratory Topics
Lab basics: Pipetting; Cell culture techniques; primer design, mapping and molecular cloning; restriction enzyme digestion of recombinant plasmid and ligation; Nucleic Acids isolation, purification, and quantification; bacterial transformation, reverse transcription PCR, quantitative real time PCR; SDS-PAGE and Western blot; Bioinformatics tools

Credit
Although no grades are given for BioTech Courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. Upon completion of this 4-day program, each participant will receive 2.8 CEUs. Upon completion of each workshop, a certificate is issued.
