This 3-day lecture/ hands-on laboratory workshop will cover various applications of electrophysiology in basic science and application driven research. Selected lecture topics will provide a broad background of electrophysiology, from equipment to analysis techniques; technical protocols for electrophysiology procedures and troubleshooting during surgery, data acquisition, experimental integration and online/offline analysis. During this intensive workshop, participants will get the opportunity to discuss basics of electrophysiology and advanced troubleshooting techniques with subject matter experts from both academia and industry.
Lecture and Hands-on Laboratory Topics:
Electrophysiology as a field; Signals of interest including electro-encephalograph (EEG), local field potentials (LFP) multiunit and single unit action potentials (spikes); Electrode Types including Acute electrodes, Chronic electrodes, Surface Electrodes, and Depth Electrodes; Surgical methods; Recording system architecture: Buffers, Differential mode amplification, Analog Digital conversion, Clock signals, Online processing, Data storage, Offline analysis. Recording software basics: Visualization of neural signal, Acquisition channel configurations, Sampling frequency, Filtering, Saving files; Recording software advanced: Advanced visualization, Controlling auxiliary I/O for experimental integration; Wireless recording technologies; Behavioral system integration; File structures; Data analysis in GUI; Data analysis in MATLAB; Manual and automatic online spike sorting; Noise troubleshooting: Signal acquisition theory, Common sources of noise, Reference and ground schemes, Best practices for low noise recording, Hardware solutions, Software solutions; Closed loop electrophysiology: Closed loop theory and application, MATLAB, C++, Real time processing. Neural Stimulation: Effects and uses of stimulation, Electrodes for stimulation, Waveform parameters, Stimulation hardware. Human Electrophysiology: Application of invasive electrophysiology in human, Regulatory requirements for experiments with humans, Tools for human electrophysiology.

Researchers, clinicians, and academics interested in learning the tools and techniques to acquire and analyze neural signals. Researchers and clinicians interested in the barriers and opportunities in invasive human electrophysiology.
