Big data has been transformative in fields ranging from cancer biology to epidemiology, and is becoming increasingly universal. However, big data analysis presents unique challenges to the researcher. In many cases, big data is simply clustered or reduced to facilitate analysis, but this can affect the accuracy/quality of any outputs. Upon completion of this workshop, students will be able to understand and apply machine learning techniques that are ideal for big data analysis tasks. Topics covered will include deep learning, self-supervised learning, and transfer learning. Students will also be able to use the Apache Spark unified analytics engine for large-scale data processing. This workshop will consist of interactive sessions on Zoom and independent study sessions during which the participants will complete tutorials and assignments. The workshop will conclude with the completion of a small project: the participants will use newly learned methods to analyze a dataset of their own choice.
Basic coding ability in Python, Java, or R.
