BIOL 007A | Basic Techniques in Mammalian Cell Culture

NIH Fellows or NIH community members being sponsored by their lab and awaiting payment authorization can tentatively hold a seat using the “Reserve A Seat” option. Payments need to be received within 7 business days from date of reservation or before the start of a workshop, whichever comes first. Seat reservations will be automatically cancelled if payment is not received prior to workshop.

This three-day lecture and laboratory course is structured to provide life scientists who are not experienced in mammalian cell culture with an introduction to the principles and practices that will facilitate their ability to develop the use of in vitro systems. After successful completion of the workshop, participants are expected to feel comfortable handling general mammalian cell lines, detecting most common problems in cell culture room and troubleshoot accordingly.

Lecture and Lab Topics
Sterile techniques and cell culture; observing different live mammalian cell lines on inverted phase microscope; cell counting with hemocytometer and automatic cell counter; cell passages; transfection methods and their application; freezing and thawing cells; lipofectamine transfection; fluorescent microscopy; starvation assay and osmotic pressure/cytoskeleton assay; end point dilution and G418 drug selection for producing stable cell lines

Credit
Although no grades are given for Workshops, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. Upon completion of this 3-day program, each participant will receive 2.1 CEUs. Upon completion of each workshop, a certificate is issued.

Refund Policy
100% tuition refund for registrations cancelled 14 or more calendar days prior to the start of the workshop.
50% tuition refund for registrations cancelled between 4 to 13 calendar days prior to the start of the workshop.
No refund will be issued for registrations cancelled 3 calendar days or less prior to the start of the workshop.

Notification
All cancellations must be received in writing via email to Ms. Carline Coote at registration@faes.org.
Cancellations received after 4:00 pm (ET) on business days or received on non-business days are time marked for the following business day. 
All refund payments will be processed by the start of the initial workshop.

  • Reservations 
    A special seasonal rate plus 13% tax for all workshop attendees is available at The Bethesdan by Hilton Hotel.  The rate includes complimentary in-room WiFi, breakfast buffet, $15 discounted overnight parking, and complimentary shuttle to and from the NIH campus.
    A credit card will be required to book the reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours prior to scheduled arrival to avoid a no-show charge. Check-in time is 3:00 p.m.; check-out is 12:00 p.m.

  • Location and Transportation 
    The Bethesdan is located within walking distance (0.8 miles) from the NIH main campus. Please inquire with the hotel directly regarding their shuttle schedule to/from the campus and other hotel amenities. The nearest Metro subway stops to the hotel are the Bethesda station (1 mile South of The Bethesdan) and Medical Center station (1 mile North of The Bethesdan), both on the Red line.

Access to the NIH Campus
All NIH visitors must enter through the Visitor’s Gateway Center (Bldg. 66) located at 9000 Rockville Pike-Rt. 355/Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, MD. Taxi, bus, personal auto, and Uber/Lyft drop-off as well as the Medical Center (Red line) Metro subway station, a visitor’s parking garage (MLP-11), and access to the NIH campus shuttles are all located at this facility. Parking at the MLP-11 visitor’s garage is $12/day. 

NIH Security Screening
Please arrive early at the Visitor’s Gateway to allow for security screening which could take 10 to 30 minutes depending on the volume of campus visitors. You MUST show a valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport).
