NIH Fellows or those being sponsored by their lab can enroll tentatively, using the Contract: SF-182 option on the workshop’s registration site while waiting for authorization of payment. Enrollment is not guaranteed until payment is received.
Workshops generally run from 9:00am - 5:00pm.
This four day lecture and hands-on laboratory course is designed to provide the novice with an introduction to the molecular biology and related laboratory procedures which are widely used in biotechnology. The participants in this workshop will acquire skill in the use of "generic" methods, and through an understanding of such methods, improve their effectiveness as workers in a contemporary research laboratory.
Lecture Topics
Basics of mammalian & bacterial cell culture and cell maintenance. Types of cell lines, differences between cell line and primary culture; Introduction to Nucleic Acids; DNA and RNA extraction and Purification. Methods to quantify and analyze DNA and RNA. Protein Purification & Analysis; Basics of genetic engineering: Restriction Enzymes and Restriction Mapping; Other Pertinent Enzymes; Cloning expression vectors; Principles, Theory, and Optimization of Polymerase Chain Reaction and its variations
Laboratory Topics
Lab basics: Pipetting; Cell culture techniques; primer design, mapping and molecular cloning; restriction enzyme digestion of recombinant plasmid and ligation; Nucleic Acids isolation, purification, and quantification; bacterial transformation; PCR; SDS-PAGE and Western blot; Bioinformatics tools
Comprehensive Binder
Contains all notes, protocols, and reference material needed. No additional books are required.
Credit
Although no grades are given for Workshops, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours. Upon completion of this 4-day program, each participant will receive 2.8 CEUs. Upon completion of each workshop, a certificate is issued.
Refund Policy
100% tuition refund for registrations cancelled 14 or more days prior to the start of the workshop.
50% tuition refund for registrations cancelled between 4 to 13 days prior to the start of the workshop.
No refund will be issued for registrations cancelled 3 days or less prior to the start of the workshop.

Cancellations received after hours are time marked for the following day.
All refund payments will be processed by the start of the initial workshop.

A special rate is available to all workshop attendees. This includes complimentary buffet breakfast, guest room Wi-Fi, and discounted $15 parking per night.
