What are generic prescription drugs?
A generic drug is an identical copy of a brand name drug in ingredients, dosage, safety, strength, how it’s taken, quality, performance and intended use. Generic drugs are manufactured in facilities that are required to meet the same FDA standards of good manufacturing practices as brand name products.
Why use generic prescription drugs?
There 2 primary benefits to using generic drugs:
- Generic drugs are less expensive than brand name medications
- Generic drugs are safe, effective, Resources FDA approved and contain the same ingredients as their name brand equivalents
How much would I save by using generic prescription drugs?
Here is a comparison of copay costs for generic and brand name drugs:
Brand Copay |
Generic Copay |
Total Savings |
$50/mo |
$10/mo |
$40/mo |
$600/yr |
$120/yr |
$480/yr |
Why do generic prescription drugs cost less?
When patents on brand name drugs near expiration, manufacturers can apply to the FDA to sell generic versions. Because generic manufacturers don’t incur development costs, they can sell their product at substantial discounts.
More than one company can make generic products – this introduces competition to the market, which also results in lower prices. These saving are directly extended to you, the patient, in the form of lower copays.
How can I purchase generic prescription drugs?
- Ask your doctor: Talk to your doctor to see if there are generic options available for your medication(s).
- Ask your pharmacist: When you fill your prescription, ask the pharmacist if there is a generic alternative.
I found my experience extremely helpful and can't think of anything that needs improvement.
