BIOF 076 | Creating Plots, Graphs and Maps using R

May 18, 2020 to May 21, 2020

ONLINE

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED

Registration occurs on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for registration is one week before the first day of the course.  If you are unable to register before the deadline, please email: registrar@faes.org or call 301-496-7977 for space availability.

NIH Fellows or NIH community members being sponsored by their lab and awaiting payment authorization can tentatively hold a seat using the “Reserve A Seat” option. FAES must receive payment within 7 business days after reserving a seat or 3 business days before the start of the workshop, which ever comes first. If payment is not received in this time frame, your reservation will be cancelled.

Workshops generally run from 9:00am - 5:00pm.

Background
R is the industry standard for creating scientific graphs and plots. There are several different R packages available for creating impressive plots, graphs and maps including plotly, ggplot2, ggvis, diagrammer - for diagrams, dygraphs - for time series data, leaflet - for plotting maps, graphviz - for graphs. This training will walk through participants in creating awesome, interactive, static, shareable plots using popular R packages.

Simultaneous access to two screens is highly recommended for adequate learning experience. Examples include two laptops, one computer with two screens, one laptop and one tablet, etc.

Objectives
Participants will get a brief hands-on introduction to the R platform, followed by hands-on walkthrough for creating several different popular plots, graphs and maps like scatter plots, density plots, correlation plots, pca plots, surface plots, dot plots, star plots, circular plots, trees, heatmaps, panel graphs, 3D graphs, network graphs. We will start from formatting data and go all the way to loading data, setting parameters, creating the images and saving the outputs.

Highlights
Participants will work with RStudio. A copy of all the scripts used in the class to create plots, graphs and maps will be provided to the participants at the end of the training. Participants will also receive a PDF of a cookbook style manual for all exercises.

Who should attend

  • Researchers and academics who are aspiring to learn to create scientific plots, graphs and maps using R.
  • Clinicians and biomedical students interested in learning the ways and means to visualize their data using R.
  • Scientists in program administration interested in learning the standard tools and techniques used for R based data visualization.

Prerequisites
Participants should be comfortable with basic computer skills.

Training Rate
$1,199.00

Discounted Training Rates
$695.00 - NIH Trainees (fellows, postdocs, postbacs - NIH ONLY)

Comprehensive File
A PDF file containing all notes, protocols, and reference material will be provided. No additional books are required.

Credit
Although no grades are given for courses, each participant will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) based on the number of contact hours.   One CEU is equal to ten contact hours. Upon completion of the course each participant will receive a certificate, showing completion of the workshop and 2.1 CEUs.

Refund Policy
100% tuition refund for registrations cancelled 14 or more calendar days prior to the start of the workshop.
