GRAD 500 Writing and Publishing a Scientific Paper Workshop
This four-week, writing-intensive workshop is designed for NIH trainees and biomedical scientists at all levels. Participants will write a draft of a research paper based on data generated from their current or previous study for publication in a peer-reviewed science journal.
This workshop focuses on the organization of a scientific research paper, with an emphasis on the two most difficult sections to write, Introduction and Discussion. It will also cover designing tables and figures and writing a clear and concise abstract and cover letter for submission to a science journal. In addition, participants will learn about the publication process from a sciencce journal editor's perspective, along with how to choose the right science journal for their paper as well as how to navigate peer review. Participants will receive and provide feedback on weekly written assignments through peer review groups and will also receive feedback on their writing from the instructor.
Learning objectives:
- Write a rough draft of a scientific paper, focusing on the two hardest sections to write—the introduction and the discussion
- Discuss the all-important abstract and submission of a cover letter
- Learn how to construct figures and tables
- Understand the publishing process, including learning about why manuscripts get accepted/rejected
- Respond effectively to reviewers' comments.
All registrants must have sufficient data to begin writing a paper and be willing to spend 3-5 hours per week on assignments. Attendance is required for all classes. Please also note eligibility criteria.
This course is offered as a non-credit, daytime course that is not part of the Graduate School's traditional academic, credit-bearing and semester-long evening courses.
Eligibility
NIH trainees as well as biomedical scientists, biomedical researchers and/or analysts in the D.C. metro area. Participants from satellite NIH campuses across the country can participate via live webinar. A certificate of completion will be awarded to those participants who successfully complete the course.
NOTE: as can be inferred from the title of the workshop as well as the description, this workshop is beneficial for biomedical researchers and is not designed for researchers in social sciences or the humanities.
