GENL001 Unchartered Waters: Leveraging Emotional Intelligence in Unprecedented Times.
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a skill that enables one to identify moods, impulses, and behaviors in order to manage them in a positive way. This three-week course will focus on the four core competencies of emotional intelligence – self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management – in order to teach participants how to manage stress, demonstrate empathy to others, and communicate effectively during challenging and unprecedented times.
GENL002 The Social Contract in a Pandemic World.
In this course, we will explore the possible duties and obligations each of us are owed by applying John Locke’s understanding of the social contract, as found in his Treatise of Civil Government, to science, health, medicine, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Our investigation will begin with an investigation of Locke’s Treatise and the social contract. Much like scientists observe the reactions of cells in a flask, we will then observe the reactions from our thought experiments, applying Locke’s philosophy to current events and situations brought about by the Covid-19 Pandemic. Through journal entries and live virtual discussions, we will consider the relationship between the social contract and vaccine research, social distancing, production and distribution of protective gear, and the role of front-line workers like ER doctors and nurses.
IMMU001 Emerging Coronaviruses.
Emerging microbial pathogens are of increasing concern both nationally and internationally with the potential to cause widespread morbidity and mortality at an unprecedented level. The current outbreak of COVID-19 provides evidence that unknown microbial agents have the ability to emerge from their natural hosts to spread, adapt, and cause disease on a global scale. This course will investigate the microbiological, environmental, and social factors that contribute to emergence of novel Coronavirus (SARS, MERS, COVID-19) outbreaks, and review the basic biology, diagnostics, immunology, potential therapies, and preventive strategies necessary to control and prevent these outbreaks.
TECH001 Biomedical and Life Sciences Valuation and Market Assessment: Valuing Innovative Technologies in Science.
This course provides students the insights into how to apply market assessments and the valuation process to their own products, technologies, intellectual property, or companies. We use processes developed by real-world experts in technology valuation to give you the experience, knowledge, models and process templates you need to develop your own valuation models for any situation or technology. At the conclusion of this class, you will have the tools and knowledge needed to be a Technology Evaluator. Your instructor will help guide this process and will offer you information, insights and access to subject matter experts who can help. You will create your own processes, identify the data sources, and locate the key resources needed to develop a professional valuation. We include lessons, in-class discussions, exercises, and guest presentations. In the course, we will provide the relevant readings, and materials you’ll need to understand how intangibles, and novel technologies can have a value assigned. You will also review the critical factors involved in presenting and marketing technologies and innovation to maximize its value.
